from the Editorial Note in Palm-of-the-Hand Stories by Yasunari
Kawabata:
| "....Kawabata believed that the essence of his art was expressed
in a series of short-short stories written over the entire span
of his career. Despite their brevity, these stories contain most
of the elements of Kawabata's longer work. Just as a haiku
may contain a richness rivaling that of a longer poem, so these
stories...rival longer prose fictions." |
The Japanese classmates' stories may not be rated by some critics
to be quite as literary as Kawabata's short-shorts, but they have
their own inimitable charm.
